Conflicts and Negotiations in the Intergenerational Succession of Family Firms: A Literature Review.

This chapter intends to stimulate a serious debate on the topic of conflict in family businesses and the theory of negotiation as a tool to resolve these conflicts. The methodology is based on the survey of the main literature on these topics. The United Nations is the most productive international organization in resolving international world conflicts. The UN uses different techniques and approaches to resolve international conflicts, including mediation. This study analyzes the process of mediation and international conflict management from the point of view of UN efforts in the Western Sahara conflict, which has been ongoing since 1975. To achieve their goals, organizations for individuals with intellectual disability have to stimulate high-quality relationships between professionals and family members. Therefore, achieving professionals’ trust in family members has become a challenge. One relevant factor in explaining professional’s trust in families is the degree to which family members use the “problem-solving” conflict management strategy (high concern for oneself but also for the other party) in their disputes–disagreements with professionals.
